How to grow lots of green onions/scallions on the cheap

For this year’s garden I asked a certain somebody to get me green onion bulbs from the garden center. She returned with yellow (normal) onions but we didn’t realize until 2 weeks after planting.

Luckily the web is full of amazing stuff and people and we learned this amazing trick. Thank you so much Jane from MyInspiredCreation!!!

Here’s how to do it:

Go buy your favorite green onions from grocery store or farmer’s market. Dice up and enjoy as usual.

Dice them up

Save the bulb. DON’T EAT IT! DON’T THROW IT OUT!

Place in bulb in cup of water or soil.

put in water

Wait like almost no  time at all. Seriously, I’m talking like one week.

A Week's Growth

A Week’s Growth

Get your scissors, cut off some more yummy green onions, dice, eat enjoy. They will continue to grow back until… I don’t know how long… but at least a full growing season.

Yup, I was surprised. My mom refuses to believe this is true, so today on Mother’s day (along with something else nice) day I’m bringing her a bunch of starts to prove it to her.
Do you think worms would make a good mother’s day gift? lol
